Weekly Summary

Getting Through

I cannot complain about how the week went. As I reported Tuesday, I’d completely turned things around and healthy living, eating and intermittent fasting. Thursday things took a turn for the worse and once more two old enemies returned to haunt. More of that later. I’m happy to lose a little this week and feel much better despite suffering from a cold (my first illness in ages), which I cannot shake off. Unfortunately for me, not one of those bugs which put you off your food!!!

Any weight loss is good of course but a little disappointed I couldn’t finish the week as good as I started. That’s the way it goes. I’m in Easter eating mode as I type and promised myself I’ll get back to the job tomorrow. How many times do overweight folk have to do this? Just about every bloody week!

A Week Descends…

With A Trip To Lidl

My significant other, Larice, is cooking a massive meal for the family for Easter. These meals take a fair bit of planning and numerous trips to shops. With supplies at HQ a little low, I went to Aldi Thursday to do some shopping….

Lidl Bakery, getting through.

Supermarkets aren’t stupid. They do things for a reason. So, it’s no surprise when you walk into Lidl the smell of the bakery hits you right in the face. And since quitting smoking, I can smell even better. But Thursday when I went in, I’d already pre-determined I was going to buy bakery items. I still get things in my head and that is that. A few carbs from the bakery won’t do me too much harm, I convinced myself optimistically.

How They Fool You

On the Lidl app, every Thursday you get a notification of offers and limited items they have in-store. As I perused, I noticed there were four paninis for a pound. Looks like a great deal, not had a lot of carbs in ages, so I’ll have a bit of that! I noticed when in-store, a panini costs 32p. So when you buy four, you save a massive 28p. This is how marketing gimmicks get us! Fool us into thinking we are getting a better deal than we are. They’re all at it! And I am stupid enough to fall for such sneaky tricks. Still, 28p is 28p but had I not seen the offer, I probably wouldn’t have even thought about purchasing. I’ve learned to ignore the smells and lure of the Lidl bakery!

Pretzels getting through
The lure of the pretzel was too much!

Predictably, I grabbed two pretzels and four paninis. Leaving two paninis for the girls, I took a thousand calories of carbs to work with me. This was never going to end well!

All Fine Until…

Another Sugar Hiccup!

I’d already reached my maximum intake when I was offered a piece of delicious-looking homemade lemon drizzle cake. And boy it was good. I heartily waffled two slices. I got home, feeling like shit and ate more. Friday I was debauched in a Lindt easter egg with eating pretty much out of control. Same yesterday as well although have been avoiding sugar. As I type this fine and sunny Sunday morning, I’m feeling bloated and fat. Shows what you become when you eat the wrong food.

Naughty, nice and damaging!

Spot The Difference

Before Friday morning, I felt great. I’d eaten well and was intermittent fasting. This shows how if you make one slight wrong turn you get yourself into a whole heap of messy trouble. However, there are ways of getting through. Mentally, I’m feeling much stronger than I have done in quite a while. This is critical to success. I’ve not laced my body with too much sugar although a big family meal is planned today for Easter and I’ve kind of resigned myself to another day of debauchery. On the plus side, I’ve not even been remotely tempted to touch alcohol. I can get away with some slight sober overeating but get liquor involved and the trouble becomes seriously real.

Staying Booze Free For Now….

Hated Feelings

I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Taking mostly carb-laced bakery foodstuffs to work was a bad idea and not one I shall be repeating. I need reminders. I’m amazed at where such a slapdash error led me. No more, it was critical to have those few good days. I’ve also had a reminder of how much I hate feeling bloated and that feeling of eating too much. And how much I love how I feel when I eat real food and intermittent fasting.

More real food, less carbs, please!

Problem With Carbs…

A Thousand Calories Of Bakery

And it’s as simple as that. My work meals on Thursday were two pretzels, two paninis and tuna sweetcorn mayo. A thousand calories of bakery. Had I eaten real food, I may have still eaten the lemon drizzle but doubt I’d have stuffed my face post-work in front of an episode of The Professionals. And this is where bread is nasty.

We stopped buying bread when we started.
And for good reason!

Breadstuff just doesn’t do anything worthwhile. We stopped buying bread a long time ago. And our lives are much better for it. Nutritionally, bread is nothing. A lot of carbs and you are less than fulfilled. Had I taken my usual thousand calories of real food to work, I’m convinced the week wouldn’t have ended badly. This is not even a sugar problem for a change but firmly a carb problem. I could see on my app, just how many carbs I went over due to eating just four bakery items.

Bread is officially an ultra-processed food which is the worst kind of processed food. It may be one of the better ultra-processed foods but the reality is, it’s best to eat minimally or not at all. I used to be completely addicted.

Hampered By Illness

First For A While!

I was priding myself on the fact I made it through the whole winter without getting ill. That all changed Wednesday when I was struck down with a mild cold. Not one of those bugs where I lost my appetite either, actually it increased. Thankfully, this morning I’m for the first time in days feeling a little better. Thank you to Lemsip and Beechams for helping me get over this!

It’s been so long since I last had a nasty bug, I’d forgotten how much they can drag you down. Weird because when I was younger I used to get colds and flu all the time. And proper flu as well, which I’ve been unfortunate to have three times!

Operation April

A New Dawning

The last couple of months have been difficult. Getting properly going has not happened at all. A few good days here and then. A lot of descending into carnage. But, I’ve still lost a couple of kilos. And never once seriously considered giving up. Which is, after all the easy option! Last week taught me what I have to do for a prolonged run and what to avoid…

Of course, this is all stuff I know well. Cut the carbs, sugar and processed food. Three meals a day between 12 and 8 with intermittent fasting. Simple, right? Like any weight loss plan, simple to create – but difficult to implement. But not impossible. Far from impossible. When handed temptation, think of the wrong turn with the lemon drizzle cake and Lidl bakery items! As you get older, it becomes more difficult as well. But not impossible. Reaching a healthy BMI is NOT IMPOSSIBLE! But a challenge… a resounding yes!

Saturday 30 March 2024. Shining Sun!!!!

Today, I eat well with my family. Tomorrow a new era starts. Beginning of the month and all that. The clocks went forward last night. British Summer Time Is here! The sun shines! Mentally I feel fantastic but physically bloated and fat. I know a couple of good days and I’ll feel great. Watch out for the reports on Operation April! There are many ways of getting through!
