Weekly Summary

Getting Better

I’ve had a most fantastic week and feel firmly back on track after the failure of February. There was every intention of changing my weigh day to Monday. I only thrust myself on the scales Saturday as a backup. Glad I did because I’ve concluded Monday weigh days are not going to be realistically doable simply because life events generally happen at weekends. However, with my new working hours which give me more time during the day, blogging on a Monday is workable. So. “going forward” as my boss frequently says, Saturday weigh-in, Monday blogging.

Anyway, happy to get back on track and delighted to report a 1.1 kg (2.42 pounds) weight loss. I felt I was losing my grip but am clawing it back. I’m moving, breathing and feeling great. All part of the getting better process! The spring I reported sprung has disappeared (it’s ruddy freezing outside!) but I’m feeling happy with the progression.

Cold, grey and overcast!

Regaining Focus

Intermittent Fasting Working

The main reason I’m getting better is effort. In hindsight, making an effort was pretty effortless. Once your mind switches and you stay focused, get through each day as it comes, stick with the plan and everything becomes easier. Surprisingly so. Getting the brain in gear is the tricky bit.

I’ve got to a stage where I accept wobbles. They are going to happen and you have to deal with them. These can last a day a week or even a month. I will write about intermittent fasting in more depth at some point but it does work and is very effective especially when you’ve let your guard slip a little. A good way of getting back onto the weight loss horse.

Keep Monitoring

Noting records and jotting the journey down, I’ve found imperative. I got through the weekend much better because I stayed focused. I went for a ridiculously long 12000 step, five miles (8 km) walk on Saturday morning and stepped (no pun intended!) everything up a small notch. More steps, less food and much more focus. I monitored the weekend for a change and whilst I just about kept within my limits, I kept tabs on what I was doing.

Not a great Sunday but at least I monitored.

Small Changes, Massive Difference

I’ve been shocked at how the small changes have made a massive difference. Clothes slightly looser and a spring in my step when walking my freeloading friend at the weekend took me by surprise. The changes have been simple. Slightly up the step count with three balanced meals a day in an eight-hour window. This was slightly relaxed over the weekend.

To the Etihad and back, a five-mile round trip!

The Weekend

It’s Tricky!

As we all well know, the weekend is the trickiest. I’ve blogged recent weekends have slipped a little which is why I convinced myself to start weighing on a Monday. I think this got me through last week and helped me focus on getting back on track. When you let yourself go, it can be extremely difficult to start over again so I’m delighted to find a way to work.

Dining in, Eating Out

Dining in and eating out need not be a drama. It certainly works more effectively when you’re getting better within. I’d already downed a takeaway Saturday night (the usual kebab and chips). Having completed that epic walk and on the back of a seriously good week, the weekend overconsumption wasn’t much of a problem. And I noted everything down. This is the way to go!

The goodness of Pesto Food!

In the UK it was Mother’s Day yesterday so the family headed out for a meal. We went to Pesto in The Trafford Centre which was wonderfully quieter than usual. Probably a mixture of it being Mother’s Day and Manchester City playing Liverpool in a crucial but not season-defining Premier League match.

Fresh back from our Italian adventures, we were indulging in more Italian cuisine. We love Pesto and the great thing is the dishes are small and calories listed on the menu. I went for potatoes and fried chicken with mayo which came in at 1000 calories. There are healthier, less calorific options. As chain restaurants go, Pesto is one of the best.

Sugar Hiccup

Afterwards, we headed to the rather posh Haute Dolci for dessert. They broke all world records for service by taking 45 minutes to prepare but I’ll forgive them because a) we weren’t in a rush and b) it was worth it. Stupidly I never took a picture so have taken a dodgy snap off my phone from the website! I worked out the calories as best I could, somewhere around 650. It was bloody marvellous.

It does pretty much look like this in real life!

My sugar intake has reduced and consuming brought a rush of sugar to my head! However, I purchased some French Toast at Tesco on Monday and was somewhat surprised and taken aback by the amount of sugar. It is bloody hard and sometimes nigh on impossible to avoid the sweet stuff sometimes! Always read the label!

Ouch! Sugar and Glucose-Fructose Syrup!

The Week Ahead

More Of The Same!

I feel very on top of things again after the recent struggles. I need to adapt this approach moving forward. Yes, we are always going to let ourselves go a little but if we stop monitoring and stop focusing, then that’s simply asking for trouble. When I put weight on, it was always because I stopped weighing myself and promised myself I would next week. Next week would turn into a month which would turn into two months before I felt so fat and uncomfortable, I’d force myself onto the scales.

I’m so glad those days are behind me and am now moaning I’ve only lost 700 grams in a month! I got my weekend focus back as well which is great. More of the same this week, Mr Franklin and you will truly feel you are getting better.
